Timeline of Important Events in Canon History:
  • Born in the 0 District to a whore who wanted to keep her baby, with the aid of all of her friends raising enough funds to support her and her child. The doctor preciding was named as the father despite having no relation; he was raised by the entire community.

  • His mother was killed in a fire as a result of gang warfare. His father killed the aggressors and died in the same fire. Randel was still a child at the time.

  • Randel found a home with a group of kids who called themselves the Tumbleweeds.

  • One of his sisters in the Tumbleweeds fell ill to an epidemic that spread throughout 0 District. The medication for the illness was scarce; Randel sold himself in order to get the medication for her, made his brothers in the Tumbleweeds promise to take care of her.

  • Randel was bought by the Kauplan Institute and used in their experimentation processes in order to influence the outcome of an ongoing war.

  • At an unknown point in time Randel was entered into the military and promoted to Corporal in his assignment the 901 Anti-Tank Troopers regiment-- a regiment specially created to approach enemy tanks on foot regardless of any injuries they sustain, and annihilate the crew manning the tanks at point blank range.

  • The war ends three years before the start of the storyline.

  • Randel encounters Second Lieutenant Alice L. Malvin and State Section III, the War Relief division of the Imperial Army in a small city being terrorized by the bitter remnants remnants of the 903 Chemical Tactics Troops regiment. They resolve the crisis, Lt. Malvin welcomes Randel into Section III because of his active efforts in helping with the Relief Effort.

  • Randel assists Section III on multiple missions, each of them requiring him to use his skills as an Anti-Tank Trooper in order to resolve the crisis. One of his comrades starts to suspect there being something lurking deeper than what is seen on the surface, and slowly manages to pick up bits and pieces of the 'Invisible 9' in his research. The use of the number 9 has been outlawed in the naming of military regiments since the first Emperor died on September the 9th in the middle of battle. The '9XX' regiments are off of the official records-- although the chief of Section III, who is a veteran of the previous war, seems to have a clue. The investigation is dropped.

  • Efforts to relocate the refugees living in the city's sewers puts Section III in company with the Waterworks company, which has the last remnant of 908- High Temperature Troops in it's employ. Randel once again faces a soldier who was part of the 'Invisible 9' and couldn't adapt to life outside of the war-- for there was no way for this soldier to even survive outside of the specialized suit he was issued any longer. Randel had no choice but to fight this soldier with his full might, for there was no way to save the man.

    Personality:

The greatest motivator for the decisions Randel Oland makes in his life is his guilt and regret for his past actions, his determination to make reparations for his perceived crimes, and his decision to find a way to do some good in the world.

Much of Randel's adult life has been shaped by the war that he was made to fight in for reasons that weren't entirely of his own volition. The training and mental conditioning he was forced to undergo by the Kauplan Institute has altered his consciousness, awareness, and sense of self to such a degree that he sees himself as little more than a monster whose sole purpose is to destroy. Having spent his youth greatly admiring the gentle man whom he considered a father-- the same gentle man who urged him not to act in vengeance and raise his hand against another human with his dying breath, Randel holds a great deal of guilt in regards to what he had to do in the war, and even refers to himself as a 'murderer' from time to time although he was acting on orders rather than passion. Additionally, the horrors of the war and his experiences both within the Kauplan Institute and during his time in the 901-ATT has left him so traumatized that the mere sight of cooked meat set before him triggers a PTSD-like reaction that makes him physically ill, and he can't bear to lift the massive handgun that fires 13mm rounds, known as a Door Knocker, without the influence of lantern that he at once loathes and is terrified to leave behind. In the aftermath of the war, Randel chose to live a life of penance instead of taking his own life or trying to settle into a state resembling normalcy like many of the soldiers did.. He wiled away his time for three years, drifting from town to town and calling none of them home as if he were in a sort of purgatory-- truly one of the living dead, a veritable Gespenst like the members of the 901-ATT were referred to.

2nd Lieutenant Alice L. Malvin's words during their initial meeting, about how his actions in taking down the tank that was being used to terrorize a town three years after the war ended could be considered a part of the War Relief efforts of Section III, he found something resembling purpose. Under the young Lieutenant's influence, Randel stepped back into society in order to actively make reparations for his own self-perceived guilt and crimes. While he doesn't understand how to live in regular society any longer, he is determined to keep trying and fighting-- both against those who would impede the War Relief efforts and against the demons within his own mind-- and, ultimately, find a place where he can do some good in the world.

However, life outside of the war isn't easy for him. Standing at a towering 7'5" and covered head to toe in terrible scars, Randel is an intimidating man to look upon. However, as much as Randel inspires awe and intimidates strangers at first glance, he is an incredibly humble soul who is awkward in social affairs due to his experience and noted to be very timid. He is afraid to act on his own in many instances for fear of hurting those around him due to his immense size, and he slouches in almost every situation as if he is trying to make himself appear smaller than he actually is. Although he is an enlisted soldier and earns enough of a salary to keep a modest but comfortable residence in the city, with a steady supply of food and resources, Randel is the sort of man who instead willfully chooses to live under a bridge by one of the rivers in the city, feeding parts of his military-issued rations to the feral cats who live there.

The money he earns, the audience later learns, is always sent off in full to the boys and girls he considers his younger brothers and sisters in the 0 District-- the lawless region in town-- and he repeatedly approaches the postal staff just to be sure that his packages are making it through. His loyalty to his hometown, so to speak, is still so strong even after all these years that the thought of letters not reaching their intended recipient is enough to bring him onto the verge of tears.

After he sold himself for the medication to cure his sister's illness and was bought up by the military, he wrote 'Oland' on his family register despite not being given an official 'family name' at birth. Instead, in following with surname conventions, 'Oland' refers to the 0 District in a subtle way-- and it's his own small way of remaining true to his origins no matter how altered he has become since he left those winding allyways.
